The .38 Chiefs Special

This is a recently acquired, 1st year production, 3-digit serial, Smith & Wesson Pre-Model 36 .38 S&W Special revolver with a blue finish and flat latch. The “Baby Chief” was introduced shortly after WWII as Smith & Wesson was revitalizing its commercial production. It was designed to compete in the small “pocket” snubby market. The name “Chiefs Special” was decided at a National meeting of Chiefs of Police, and the small guns began shipping as such in late 1950. This revolver features a 1 7/8"-barrel, half-moon front sight, square notch rear sight, early round trigger guard, color cased hammer and trigger and hand carved diamond checkered grips with diamonds around the escutcheons. The 3-digit serial number, round trigger guard, half-moon front sight and round butt frame make this quite the find. This one will be a great addition to any collection.
