Overview

Recently acquired from an excellent collection, this Belgian-made Browning Challenger Renaissance represents one of the rarest factory hand engraved rimfire pistols produced by FN Herstal for Browning Arms Company.

This example features the scarcer 4.5" barrel configuration, a variant encountered significantly less often than the longer 6¾" Renaissance pistols typically seen on the market. Short-barrel Renaissance Challengers are especially desirable among Browning collectors due to their lower production totals and presentation-grade character.

Serial number 58899U73 falls within the correct Belgian Challenger production range for early-1970s Renaissance pistols.

Renaissance Variant Production Numbers

The Challenger Renaissance was produced in 1972 as a limited factory engraved offering. Documented totals are:

• Total Renaissance Challengers produced: approximately 437 pistols
• 6¾" barrel examples: approximately 316 pistols
• 4.5" barrel examples: approximately 121 pistols

As a result, the 4.5" Renaissance configuration represents the minority production variant, making it notably more difficult to locate than the longer target-barrel version.
