Colt Single Action Army Bisley .45 Auto Rim
Colt Single Action Army Bisley .45 Auto Rim
Circa 1907 | 4¾" Barrel | King’s Mirror Front Sight | S&W Adjustable Rear Sight | Serial No. 289900
OVERVIEW
Offered here is an exceptional and historically interesting Colt Single Action Army Bisley, serial number 289900, custom chambered in .45 Auto Rim and accompanied by a Tyler Gun Works provenance letter documenting its history.
Serial number 289900 places this revolver in approximately 1907 production. Published Colt serialization records show 1907 beginning around serial 288000, while 1908 begins around 304000. The revolver therefore falls squarely within the original First Generation Bisley production period.
Originally introduced in the 1890s, the Colt Bisley differed substantially from the conventional Single Action Army through its distinctive grip frame, low-profile hammer, and wide trigger. Colt Bisleys shared the standard SAA serial-number sequence and were produced in several barrel lengths and chamberings.
This particular revolver has a much different story than a standard factory Bisley. It's fitted with a 4¾-inch barrel and has been customized and chambered in .45 Auto Rim, with a King’s mirror front sight, and a Smith & Wesson adjustable rear sight.
This revolver was recently acquired from the Jack Mayfield Collection and was represented as having previously belonged to respected gun writer Bart Skelton. During Skelton’s ownership, the revolver was reportedly modified in collaboration with legendary Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson.
That combination of an original First Generation Colt Bisley foundation, unusual .45 Auto Rim chambering, period-style practical sight modifications, and documented provenance makes this a particularly distinctive piece for the advanced Colt, sixgun, or firearms-history collector.
