OVERVIEW

Offered here is a J.H. Merrill First Model Carbine chambered in .54 caliber, serial number 7326, a percussion-fired, breech-loading single-shot cavalry carbine associated with Union service during the American Civil War.

Manufactured by J.H. Merrill of Baltimore, Maryland, Merrill carbines were among the more recognizable breech-loading cavalry arms of the period. Approximately 14,495 Merrill carbines of the two principal types were delivered during the Civil War era, and this example is a First Model.

The Merrill action is operated by releasing the breech lever, lifting it upward, and drawing it rearward to expose the chamber for loading a paper cartridge. This rifle retains the distinctive mechanical layout that made the Merrill carbine one of the more interesting American breech-loading designs of the 1860s.

This example has been professionally restored, with care taken to preserve its period character. The metal shows attractive areas of plum-toned patina, while the brass furniture provides a strong visual contrast.

The 22 1/8" bore remains bright overall with strong rifling, showing normal firing erosion consistent with age and previous use.

This carbine has been professionally restored while retaining its period appearance and character.

The stock shows normal handling wear consistent with age, with no major cracks or large chips noted. The metal displays a mix of restored finish and attractive plum-toned patina. Brass components remain present and provide the expected contrast against the darker steel surfaces.

The sling bar and ring remain intact. The action is reported to function correctly.
