OVERVIEW

Offered here is the Lipsey's Exclusive Smith & Wesson Model 396 Night Guard, chambered in .44 Special and built around a lightweight scandium-alloy L-Frame with a compact 3-inch barrel.

The Model 396 Night Guard returned in 2026 as part of a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Lipsey's, bringing back one of the more distinctive lightweight big-bore revolvers from Smith & Wesson's modern history. The new version retains the five-shot .44 Special concept while incorporating several updated features, most notably a no-lock frame, strengthened ball-detent lockup, stainless-steel cylinder and barrel liner, and modern low-light sights.

Its scandium frame and barrel shroud help keep overall weight to approximately 23.5 ounces, while the stainless-steel cylinder provides additional durability. A matte black finish gives the revolver the subdued appearance traditionally associated with the Night Guard series.

Factory Hogue Bantam rubber grips provide a compact, comfortable grip profile, while the sighting system combines an adjustable black rear sight with an XS green day/night tritium front sight for excellent visibility across a variety of lighting conditions.
