OVERVIEW
Offered here is a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change revolver chambered in .38 S&W Special, serial number 670140, featuring a 6" pinned barrel, traditional blued finish, color cased hammer and trigger, and checkered wood grips with gold Smith & Wesson medallions.
The Model of 1905 represents an important chapter in Smith & Wesson's revolver history, serving as a predecessor to the legendary Model 10 Military & Police. Built on the classic K-frame, these six-shot double-action revolvers became widely appreciated for their dependable construction, practical design, and traditional Smith & Wesson craftsmanship.
This particular example features the desirable 4th Change variation, distinguished by its traditional five-screw frame construction, pinned barrel, barrel-shaped ejector rod knob, and classic pre-war styling. It also bears the patent markings FEB. 6. 06, SEPT. 14. 09, and DEC. 29. 14.
The blued finish displays wear consistent with age and handling, while the cylinder has developed an attractive vintage patina. The wood grips show additional wear and some damage along the bottom, reflecting the revolver's long history.
Based on published serial-number references and documented examples, this revolver dates to approximately 1938–1939.
