Ruger No. 3 .22 Hornet Single-Shot Rifle with Scope
Ruger No. 3 Rifle – .22 Hornet Bicentennial Marked
22" Barrel | Realist USA 6x Scope | Buehler Rings | 1977 Production
Overview
The Ruger No. 3 in .22 Hornet is one of the most recognizable lightweight single-shot sporting rifles produced by Ruger during the 1970s. Built on a simplified version of the Ruger No. 1 falling-block action, the No. 3 was designed as a practical field rifle while retaining the strength and reliability of Ruger’s classic single-shot platform.
This example was manufactured in 1977 and features the distinctive barrel marking:
“MADE IN THE 200TH YEAR OF AMERICAN LIBERTY”
Although originally associated with U.S. Bicentennial-era production, Ruger continued applying this commemorative marking slightly beyond 1976, making these rifles a recognizable variation among early No. 3 production examples and an interesting crossover piece for collectors of Bicentennial-marked American firearms.
Chambered in .22 Hornet, this rifle represents one of the most desirable and practical chamberings offered in the No. 3 series, well suited for small game, varmint hunting, and traditional single-shot sporting use.
This rifle is equipped with a Realist USA 6x scope mounted in Buehler rings, a classic pairing consistent with the period when these rifles were commonly fielded.

Ruger No. 3 Configuration
The Ruger No. 3 shares the same strong falling-block action as the No. 1 but features a more utilitarian straight-grip stock and simpler metal finishing. Key characteristics include:
- Ruger falling-block single-shot action
- Compact sporting profile
- Straight grip walnut stock
- Lightweight field configuration
- Tang-mounted safety
- Factory gold bead front sight
These rifles remain popular with hunters and collectors who appreciate traditional American single-shot sporting rifles.
Bicentennial Barrel Marking
The barrel marking:
“MADE IN THE 200TH YEAR OF AMERICAN LIBERTY”
is one of the most recognizable Ruger commemorative production features of the mid-1970s. While originally introduced for 1976 Bicentennial production, the marking appears on a number of rifles assembled shortly afterward using previously roll-marked barrels.
Examples retaining this marking remain especially appealing to collectors seeking historically themed American-production firearms from the Bicentennial era.
Realist USA 6x Scope with Buehler Rings
This rifle is fitted with a Realist USA fixed 6x scope mounted in Buehler rings, a classic American sporting configuration typical of the period.
Features include:
- Fixed 6x magnification ideal for .22 Hornet field use
- Period-correct American-made optic
- Buehler steel scope rings
- Clean, traditional hunting rifle appearance
This setup complements the rifle’s lightweight single-shot design and maintains its vintage character.
Collector Appeal
The Ruger No. 3 continues to attract interest from collectors and traditional hunters due to:
- Falling-block single-shot Ruger action
- Desirable .22 Hornet chambering
- Bicentennial barrel marking
- Early production period (1977)
- Classic walnut-stock sporting configuration
- Period-correct Realist USA optic with Buehler rings - clear lenses
Examples in .22 Hornet remain among the more sought-after No. 3 variants.
