Savage Model 99 .250-3000 Savage Rifle – 22" Barrel

Lyman Rear Sight – Circa 1919 – Serial No. 203161

Overview

Offered here is a Savage Arms Model 99 lever-action rifle chambered in .250-3000 Savage, serial number 203161, presented in overall good condition.

The Savage Model 99 is one of the most distinctive American lever-action rifle designs, known for its internal hammer, rotary magazine system, streamlined receiver profile, and ability to handle pointed bullets. The .250-3000 Savage cartridge was a notable milestone in sporting-rifle history, earning its name from its original advertised velocity of 3,000 feet per second with an 87-grain bullet.

This example features a 22" barrel, checkered wood stock and forend, and a Lyman rear sight. The right side of the wood stock is stamped with the initials “G.H.” The rifle also bears patent markings for July 25, 1893 / Oct. 3, 1899 / Sep. 10, 1907 / May 25, 1909 / June 1, 1909.

The lever shows evidence of a color cased finish. The exterior color case has mostly worn from age and use, while color case remains visible on the interior portion of the lever when the action is opened.

Based on published Savage serial-number references, serial number 203161 falls within the approximate 1919 production range.

COLLECTOR NOTE

The .250-3000 Savage cartridge is strongly tied to the Savage 1899/99 rifle family and was historically significant as one of the first commercial sporting cartridges advertised at 3,000 feet per second. This rifle’s serial number places it in an early production period, and a Cody Firearms Museum records search is recommended for definitive factory configuration, shipping information, and model confirmation.

AMMUNITION NOTE

This rifle is chambered for .250-3000 Savage / .250 Savage. Always verify ammunition compatibility with the firearm markings and manufacturer guidance before use.
