Smith & Wesson Model 629 No-Dash .44 Magnum 8⅜" – Master Engraved by Bernie Wolfe
Smith & Wesson Model 629 No-Dash .44 Magnum 8⅜" – Master Engraved by Bernie Wolfe
Master Engraver Bernard “Bernie” Wolfe Signed Hand Engraving | Early No-Dash Production | Pinned Barrel | Walnut Target Grips | Wooden Presentation Case
OVERVIEW
Offered here is an extraordinary 1981 Smith & Wesson Model 629 No-Dash chambered in .44 Remington Magnum, featuring an 8⅜-inch barrel, extensive hand engraving by renowned master engraver Bernard “Bernie” Wolfe, beautifully figured walnut target grips, and a fitted wooden presentation case with tools.
Introduced in 1980, the Model 629 brought stainless steel construction to Smith & Wesson's legendary Model 29 platform. Built on the substantial N-frame, these early revolvers retained desirable traditional features, including pinned-barrel construction, which has become increasingly appreciated among Smith & Wesson collectors.
Dating to approximately 1981, this no-dash example is distinguished by the exceptional craftsmanship of master engraver Bernard Wolfe, whose work is recognized for its elaborate scroll patterns, meticulous detail, and traditional ornamental styling.
Wolfe's hand engraving extends extensively across the frame, barrel, cylinder, and surrounding metalwork. Intricate floral scrollwork is complemented by finely executed stippled backgrounds, decorative borders, crosshatched accents, and distinctive starburst motifs. The Smith & Wesson trademark and .44 MAGNUM barrel inscription are beautifully incorporated into the overall engraving pattern, creating a cohesive and striking presentation.
Of particular significance, Wolfe's signature is discreetly located beneath the ejector rod shroud, an important identifying detail connecting this revolver to the engraver's work.
The 8⅜-inch barrel features a traditional partial-length ejector rod shroud, retaining the classic silhouette of an early Smith & Wesson N-frame sporting revolver. Handsome walnut target grips feature attractive grain, checkered inlay, and S&W medallions.
Accompanied by its fitted wooden presentation case and accessories, this is an exceptional example of early Smith & Wesson N-frame craftsmanship elevated by the artistry of a recognized master firearms engraver.
