Smith & Wesson U.S. Army Model 1917 .45 ACP – 5½" Blued – WWI Military Revolver – Circa 1918

U.S. Military Contract Revolver | Matching-Number Cylinder | Color Cased Hammer & Trigger | Pinned Barrel | Lanyard Loop | Vintage Condition

OVERVIEW

Offered here is a Smith & Wesson U.S. Army Model 1917 revolver chambered in .45 ACP, serial number 118564, presented in vintage condition with a 5½" pinned barrel, traditional blued finish, and wood grips.

Developed during World War I to supplement the U.S. military's supply of Model 1911 pistols, the Smith & Wesson Model 1917 was built on the company's robust N-frame and adapted to accommodate the standard .45 ACP cartridge. These six-shot double-action revolvers became an important part of American military firearms history, valued for their solid construction and dependable design.

This particular example features several desirable period details, including a matching-number cylinder stamped 118564, color cased hammer and trigger, traditional mushroom-head ejector rod knob, and lanyard loop mounted to the butt of the grip frame. The underside of the barrel is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY", identifying its military contract configuration.

The barrel also bears the patent-date markings DEC. 17. 1901, FEB. 6. 1906, and SEP. 14. 1909.

Based on published Smith & Wesson military production records, this revolver dates to approximately 1918, placing it within the World War I production period.
