The Zastava M48A is a post-World War II Yugoslav adaptation of the iconic German Karabiner 98k, blended with design elements from the Belgian M24 series. Produced by Zastava Arms, it served as the standard service rifle of the Yugoslav People's Army from the early 1950s until it was phased out in favor of the Zastava M59/66 (a licensed SKS variant) in the early 1960s.
Following the war, Yugoslavia modernized the proven 98k platform with subtle modifications. While visually similar to its German predecessor, the M48A features several non-interchangeable parts, particularly within the bolt and action assemblies. Key distinguishing features include a top handguard that extends behind the rear sight and a slightly shorter intermediate-length receiver.
The M48A variant, introduced between 1952 and 1965, incorporated stamped metal parts, such as the magazine floor plate, to streamline production and reduce costs. Critical components, including the bolt and receiver, remained forged and machined to strict standards to ensure the rifle's renowned durability and reliability.
Additional features include a robust wood stock (typically Elm or Beech) with a thick, cupped stainless steel buttplate, a curved bolt handle, and traditional Mauser-style iron sights — a flip-up rear sight paired with a hooded front post.
